Three Ways - Day 71

Happy Birthday Dad (Daniel)

Happy Birthday Auntie Rita.

Fletcher : Today was Dads birthday.  We left Daly Waters to Three Ways.  I gave Dad some lizards and lollies.  The lizards you put on the vent in your car and it smells nice.  Then we packed up the van and left.  Dad ordered himself a toasted sandwich and then went and filled up with petrol, so mum took a bite out of his sandwich and wrapped it back up and when he ate it he didn't even notice.  We got to our site at Three Ways Roadhouse  and we set up the van.  Later on we went to the pool but it was too cold so we didn't go in.  Later on we gave dad cake and had dinner at the pub.

Mackenzie : Today was dads birthday and I gave him vouchers, a mango soap and iced coffee.  We didn't have to drive very long to get to the roadhouse.  Me, Fletcher and Dad went to the pool, we jumped it was ice cold so we didn't go all the way in.  Then dad took some photos of road trains.  We made cup cakes, he loved them then we went to the roadhouse for dinner.

Well another Power birthday today, Daniel turned 38.  He didn't want any presents as he has been buying singlets at a lot of the truck stops and wants to get a few things on the drive home, but the kids got him a few little treats so he had something to open on the day.  We drove from Daly Waters to Three Ways today, we stopped at Renner Springs for a snack and sat out the front of the roadhouse on giant rocks to eat.  We had planned to stop at Banka Banka Station but it was so busy and like Daly Waters they were camped on top of each other.  We did stop for a look and it was lovely, its on a natural spring so unlimited spring water and hot showers, just no power.  We decided to keep going and were pleased when we got to Three Ways, we got a grassy site that gave Daniel a great position to see the road trains pull in and out.  As I've said before most of our favourite sites have been at truck stops out the back of service stations.  The toilets were locked with a push button code system which is good for us campers as it ensures only the paying customers are using them and stay clean.  There was a pool, also locked with the code system, which the kids braved but didn't go in the whole way as it was freezing.  While the kids and Dan were at the pool I made some cup cakes and iced them for his birthday, like Fletcher he didn't want a fuss but we wanted to surprise him.  The kids came back quicker than expected from the cold pool and Dan poked his head in the door and the smell gave my secret baking away but he smiled and pretended to the kids not to notice.  He went to photograph some roadtrains while the kids & I sprinkled some powdered chocolate on top of the icing and got the sparklers out ready.  Dan did his best surprised face when he got back and the cakes were a big success for afternoon tea.  The kids always seem to choose home made things for their birthday tea but I knew that wasn't going to cut it with Dan, so although we tried for curried tuna pasta, his favourite ( and the only thing in the fridge & pantry we could make a meal out of!) he was keen to go to the roadhouse/pub for tea.  It is an amazing pub with so much memorabilia up on the walls.  There was such a long wait for tea as there were so many people in there but Dan was kept busy looking at the walls, the kids had coloring books and I had magazines & newspapers that they had in there.  Unfortunately tea wasn't that successful, Dan ordered sausage pasta (yes he could have had pasta at the van) his meal was cold, not warm freezing cold and he had to return it to be heated, like the 4 people before him who ordered the 2 different pastas, and there was only 2 pieces of small sausage in the whole dish.  Mackenzie's chicken was not edible, Fletcher ordered a hot dog which was great but the mustard was green instead of yellow, not a good sign.  And mine was a steak sandwich with just lettuce beetroot & tomato in it which was absolutely amazing, I hate to write this here as we will read this again and it be a reminder that theirs were yucky but mine rocked.  It always works like that when you cant be bothered going out for the night you have a great time or when you think a restaurant/meal will be terrible it is amazing.  We bought a 600ml soft drink to share which was $4.10, I know we are remote but that is a bit expensive, but it was lime lemonade and the kids hadn't had green lemonade before so it was a bit exciting for them.  It was a great night even though a couple of the meals weren't great, I think all in all Dan had a happy birthday.
